Nigeria seeks Ukraine’s collaboration in defence, economy, trade, education

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Ukraine, Shina Alege has sought increased collaboration between Nigeria and Ukraine in the areas of the economy, trade, education and defence.

Especially decrying the low volume of trade between the two countries, Alege said it had become imperative for both countries to explore the possibilities of engaging in a discussion that would enhance bilateral economic and commercial exchange.

Alege who made this call while presenting his letter of credence to the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stressed that it was time to vigorously pursue defence cooperation and conclude requisite bilateral agreements.

In light of this, Alege urged the Ukraine President to ensure all effort is geared to conclude and sign the protocol on Joint Commission and consolidate the process, which started in May 2006, between the two countries.

Keen on fostering a new vista of bilateral relations, Alege said it was high time the two countries supported the private sector so as to open the vast opportunities for commercial exchange between them.

Alege said: “Your Excellency, since Nigeria established her diplomatic presence in Ukraine, our bilateral relations have been growing steadily but we believe that we can still do more in the areas of economic and trade, education and defence. And indeed with this new dawn, we must do more.

“Your Excellency, the increasing interdependence among countries such as Nigeria and Ukraine at different levels of social, political and economic development in a global village today compels a new form of mutuality of interest and benefits, shared responsibility and genuine partnership, which we both share.

“The present low volume of trade between the two countries does not in any way reflect the enormous potentials available in our respective economies and the desires of our leaders. We can also do more in defence co-operation and also ensure the early conclusion of our bilateral agreement in these areas.

“Your Excellency, in the spirit of the new world order being promoted by the digital age, both countries need to explore the possibilities of engaging in a discussion that would enhance bilateral economic and commercial exchange. The two states should give support to the private sector in order to open vast opportunities for commercial exchange between them. This, I wish to pursue vigorously in this chapter.

“Your Excellency, it is our hope that every effort would be made to conclude and sign the protocol on Joint Commission and consolidate this process which started in May 2006 between the two countries.

“It would no doubt further strengthen our bilateral co-operation and frontiers of interaction between our two countries towards better understanding and prosperity of our people. The present low volume of trade between the two countries does not in any way reflect the enormous potentials available in our respective economies and the desires of our leaders.

“We can also do more in defence co-operation and also ensure the early conclusion of our bilateral agreement in these areas.

“Your Excellency, it is needful to state that Nigeria is engaged in structural changes in the economy and its body politic.

“I am also glad that we have made substantial progress in restoring the fundamental value of democracy and associated aspect of the people’s rights to secure decent life.

“Nonetheless, there is still much to be done and we need Ukraine to support us in this area. Under a conducive environment, economic and political exchange between our two countries would thrive.”

While praying for increased bilateral relations, Alege praised Ukraine for its role in the infrastructural and human resource development of Nigeria, especially Ukraine’s support for the Ajaokuta Steel Plant project.
