HALIFA ON OPPOSITION ALLIANCE: SYSTEM CHANGE OR REGIME CHANGE?

Halifa has state “Never Again” to an alliance of opposition parties for a mere “regime change”. One opposition camp merely aim to dislodge Barrow, so that their group of “the political elite” can enjoy the fruits of power from “regime change” – no different from the black faces at Africa’s ‘independence’ who replaced the white masters and enjoyed the fruits of ‘independence’ while ignoring the needs of the masses. Halifa is looking for another opposition alliance whose goal is “system change” to benefit “all Gambians”.

WHAT IS “SYSTEM CHANGE”?

I take it to mean a whole change of the government’s priorities from serving the needs of the urbanised elite to serving the needs of the masses nationwide. That would require a Thomas Sankara style revolution and that did not last long! There is of course the Cuban revolution which has served the masses well and lasted long, but it has been strangled by the USA and is about to die. So what is a realistic “system change” for The Gambia?

Any “System” is as good or as bad as the people who operate it and we have a clue to The Gambia’s “Systematic Problem” from a surprising source: the most times frivolous WhatsOnGambia Facebook page!

WHATS-ON-GAMBIA SUGGESTS WHAT IT IS THAT GAMBIA NEEDS TO CHANGE

Whats-on-Gambia sometimes addresses serious issues and I found this a couple of days ago:-

What’s On – Gambia 12 Sept 2021

  • The police officers who always ask for bribe are GAMBIANS
  • The Customs officers who steal to live like Hollywood stars are GAMBIANS
  • The healthcare workers who steal medicines in hospitals to start their own drug stores are GAMBIANS
  • The staff at the Ministry of Local Government who sell our land are GAMBIANS
  • The staff at the Ports who use their offices to make millions are GAMBIANS
  • The Nawec staff who ask for bribe before giving you water or electricity are GAMBIANS
  • The judges and magistrates who protect criminals for money are GAMBIANS
  • The ministers who give contracts to only their family members are GAMBIANS
  • The tailors who take your money and refuse to sew your clothes are GAMBIANS
  • The contractors who take your money and refuse to build your house are GAMBIANS
  • The teachers who give *A* to only students who attend their private classes are GAMBIANS
  • The immigration officers who ask for bribe to help you get a passport are GAMBIANS
  • The black market vendors who sell fake iPhone 12 to their  customers are GAMBIANS
  • The pharmacy license holders who help Indians, Lebanese and Chinese to import fake and substandard drugs into the country are GAMBIANS
  • The senior civil servants who pay themselves honorariums, sitting allowances and other benefits are GAMBIANS
  • The real estate agents who dupe people out of their money are GAMBIANS
  • The journalists who collect money to do “PR” for corrupt government officials and businessmen are GAMBIANS

To which a Hero Jerry added:-

  • the drivers who charge commuters double or triple fares are Gambians.
  • the criminals who sells drugs that destroy our young people are Gambians.
  • The Alkalos who sells or facilitate the selling of people’s lands are Gambians.

Hero Jerry concluded “This is the brutal fact! This is a never ending list. Unless we have an upright no compromising leader, the situation of this country will get worse”.

There have been some 400 comments and the vast majority are in agreement with Hero Jerry.

As if all that is not depressing enough, I could also add:

  • The young people who stab young Gambians to death are Gambians.

HOW DO WE START TO CHANGE THE SYSTEM?

As Hero Jerry says “Even if you bring Barack Obama here we cannot change anything. We have to change ourselves first”. And I suppose that is what FOROYAA has been trying to do for the past forty years it has been trying to “EDUCATE THE PEOPLE”.

Never Again A Grand Alliance For Regime Change!

Two types of alliances are possible in an election, that is, an alliance for regime change and an alliance for system change.

In 2016, the opposition in The Gambia and those who wanted change formed a grand alliance. Many had hoped that the alliance will result to a new start. “One Gambia, One Nation, One People” was the clarion call. Even those who did not believe in the coalition became absorbed because of the hope that a new Gambia will come to fruition and that all Gambians irrespective of whether they supported the coalition or not will benefit.

However, the end result was regime change. Many are complaining that they have not seen their interest in the change. Some are in fact blaming those who pioneered the change for not bringing the right type of change. So, in 2021 those who do not want to be blamed are set to build an alliance to go beyond regime change to build a system that would make every Gambian see that their interest has been served by the change.

Hence 2021 may witness two types of alliances amongst the opposition – a grand alliance of all those who want system change and a grand alliance of those who want regime change and it is up to the people to decide and take responsibility. History will be judge.

Gambians will realise a change in their lives if they decide to take their destiny in their own hands rather than leave it in the hands of political elites. Each is sovereign. Each has a vote. Each can say how this country is to be governed. We have a duty to take the decision that serves all of us better. That is the demand of truth and common sense.
