Guard shoots two dead in Bukasa

By Andrew Bagala

Police have arrested a private security guard, who allegedly shot dead a Congolese national and his girlfriend, he was guarding at Bukasa, Makindye Division in Kampala City.

The deceased have been identified as Siviwe Katembo, 33, and his girlfriend whose identity is yet to be known.

The suspect has also been identified as Raphael Okwanga, a security guard attached to D-GAP.

Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesman, Mr Luke Owoyesigyire, said the suspect is currently detained at Kabalagala Police Station, but his motive isn’t yet known.

“It is alleged that the suspect got annoyed with the deceased before shooting them. We have recovered the gun and spent cartridges. We are holding him on murder offences,” he said.

The bodies of the deceased persons have been conveyed to the Kampala Capital City Authority mortuary at Mulago for postmortem.

“The crime scene has been secured for further analysis. Some of the exhibits have been submitted for analysis at our Forensic Services laboratory,” Mr Owoyesigyire said.

He said the case file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecution for advice after concluding preliminary investigations.

Incidents of private security guards turning their guns to their bosses are common in Uganda.

Police attribute such incidents to poor training of guards and payment.
