Gambia To Embark On Massive Polio Vax Campaigns


As lab results have shown the reemergence of poliovirus in the country, the Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh announced plans on Wednesday to vaccinate thousands of children.

“We are preparing for at least two massive supplementary polio vaccination rounds targeting 382,908 children 0-59 months in each round,” he told reporters during a presser held at the Ministry of Health in Banjul.

The minister’s announcement came on the heels of disturbing tests results, indicating that two environmental samples collected from Banjul and Kotu, have tested positive for poliovirus type 2.

Since 1986, no cases of polio originated from the tiny West African nation, prompting the World Health Organisation (WHO) to declare in 2004 the country as free of the wild polio virus.

“Our goal is to vaccinate all children 0-59 months in The Gambia,” he said.

Consequently, the Minister of Health called on parents to co-operate with the vaccinators, urging them to move from hesitancy to vaccination…
